On the opening night of the 2017 Big Ten Championships, the IU men’s swimming and diving team won both the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays.

The No. 4-ranked Hoosiers are in first place after the opening night of competition with 128 points.

In the 200-yard medley relay, senior Bob Glover, junior Ali Khalafalla, and sophomores Vini Lanza and Ian Finnerty took home first place with an NCAA A-cut and IU record of 1:23.61. It was the first time the Hoosiers have won the event at Big Tens since 2008.

IU continued to impress after its opening win with a victory in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The squad of senior Anze Tavcar, juniors Blake Pieroni and Marwan Elkamash, and sophomore Mohamed Samy swam a 6:11.98, the NCAA’s fastest time this year. It is also the Hoosiers’ first win in the event since 1986.

Competition will resume at 11 a.m. Thursday in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion at Ohio State.
