Police investigates after toddler tests positive for cocaine

Region Filler

A one-year-old girl who tested positive for cocaine and amphetamines has triggered a police investigation.

The Department of Child Services contacted the Bloomington Police Department on Jan. 12 with the report, BPD Detective Sgt. Dana Cole said. Though the department began investigating then, it filed its initial report Tuesday, which resulted in it first appearing on Wednesday’s daily log.

Sometime shortly prior to Jan. 12 the girl’s mother noticed her daughter behaving strangely and took her to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where she was treated for flu-like symptoms. The mother took the girl home, but after she continued behaving strangely, she took her to the hospital again. There a drug screening showed cocaine and amphetamines were in her system, and DCS was alerted.

The girl was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where her condition has continued to improve, Cole said.

Police have made no arrests, but the case remains active. Cole said the girl’s parents live separately and police are working to interview the families to find out where the drugs came from.
