November volunteer opportunities available

The City of Bloomington Volunteer Network released its November volunteer opportunities. All positions open have a minimum age requirement.

Cuddler ProgramIndiana University Health Bloomington special care nursery cuddler program brings the love of cuddling and babies together. Volunteers assist staff with cuddling newborn babies that need a little special care. Often, these babies are born with an addiction to drugs and need extra time in the hospital and as much tender loving care as possible. This is a very special group of volunteers helping very special babies thrive. Minimum age is 18.

Soup Tasting on Showers Plaza — Nov. 5. With the weather may be cooling down, the soup is heating up for Soup Tasting on Showers Plaza. Celebrate this cool weather harvest from field and farm as area chefs showcase their expertise with this versatile comfort food. Sampling is warmly encouraged. Ten volunteers will assist with setting up the tasting area, overseeing the chef demonstrations and distributing samples of different soups. The volunteer shift will be from 8:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Minimum age is 18.Interview Skills MentorMy Sister’s Closet is seeking volunteers with human resources experience to work with their low-income and at-risk clients. Mentors may give advice about writing resumes and cover letters and assist with basic interview skills, including conducting mock interviews. Mentors may also help clients look for jobs online and then fill out online job applications, including posting resumes online. Minimum age is 20.

Fill the Volunteer Gap during school breaksFill the gap by volunteering short-term during IU and Monroe County Community School Corporation school breaks when many students and community members are on vacation. Volunteering during those breaks is a huge help to many local agencies that depend on volunteers to maintain their services year-round.

AmeriCorps Disaster Services Position with Red CrossThe American Red Cross is excited to offer an AmeriCorps position for Indiana Response and Preparedness. This position will challenge participants with a variety of responsibilities in unique operational situations not found in the commercial sector. This AmeriCorps member will be responsible for recruiting new volunteers, coordinating disaster training opportunities, providing disaster preparedness programs and strengthening relationships with community partners. The position will include a modest living allowance ($12,530), as well as health and childcare benefits. It will entail working 35-40 hours a week and will last 12 months. An educational award of $5,775 will be awarded upon completion of service. Minimum age is 17.

Community Wish ListDown Syndrome Family Connection educates, informs and involves people as they recognize the uniqueness and capabilities of individuals with Down syndrome and the inherent dignity of all people with developmental disabilities. Wishes include art and craft supplies, a sound system, single packaged snacks, a printer/copier/scanner/fax, stand-alone shelving, resin easel sign and or gift cards for gas.
