IUB administration looks forward to working with new faculty

IU hired 225 new full-time faculty members for the year.

The faculty hires are spread across schools and departments, said Eliza Pavalko, vice provost for faculty and academic affairs.

Many were hired into new areas on campus, including the Intelligent Systems Engineering program, the School of Global and International Studies and the Media School. However, there are new faculty in many of the other schools across campus.

The group includes research scientists, post-doctoral students, visiting professors, clinical professors, professors of practice and lecturers. About 35 percent are tenured or tenure-track professors or librarians.

The faculty hiring process begins in each department or school. When a dean decides to hire a faculty member, a hiring committee starts by writing an advertisement for the position.

After the committee goes through numerous applications, they invite two or three applicants for a campus visit. The candidates meet with faculty and students as well as do a teaching presentation or research presentation.

The committee lets the dean know of its top choice, and if the dean approves, the candidate receives an offer.

“We work with the departments and schools at every stage of this process to make sure that they are getting a strong and diverse applicant pool,” Pavalko said.

Pavalko works closely with new faculty during their first year, and she’s looking forward to learning about their research and teaching.

“Our new faculty bring such a diverse range of expertise and backgrounds to our campus,” Pavalko said. “They are truly some of the best scholars in their respective fields.”
