Rookie Alexander Rossi won the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.
Rossi’s car was running on fumes, but he was able to hold onto his lead on the last lap. Rossi went 36 laps without fuel, a large number for a driver to go without fuel.
Rossi climbed back from 33 to claim the Borg-Warner trophy as a rookie.
The last few laps saw second-place finisher Carlos Munoz battle with third-place finisher Josef Newgarden for the lead. Both were passed by Rossi as he climbed into the lead.
Last year’s Indy 500 champion, Juan Pablo Montoya was the first driver out of the race after he crashed into the safety barrier on lap 64.
