IU pitcher signs with New York Yankees

Almost a month after six Hoosiers were drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft, only one remains unsigned.

Tuesday IU junior pitcher Christian Morris announced of Twitter he would be signing a contract with the New York Yankees, who drafted him in the 33rd round.

“I'm beyond excited to start my new career as a member of the New York Yankees organization! #goyankees,” Morris tweeted about signing with the team he grew up a fan of.

Morris leaves IU after an inconsistent junior season. After being named first team All-Big Ten as a sophomore, Morris went 4-1 but with a 5.55 ERA in his junior season.

Morris is the second IU pitcher to decide to not use his final season of collegiate eligibility. Scott Effross signed a contract with the Cubs on June 27 after being drafted in the 15th round.

The only other IU player still left to decide his future is pitcher Jake Kelzer, who will be a junior if he returns next season. He was drafted in the 14th round by the Cubs.

Kelzer has until July 17 to decide whether he wants to sign a professional contract or return to IU for at least one more season.
