Indiana unemployment rates decline in April

From IDS reports

Indiana’s unemployment rate declined by 0.4 percent in April.

The state’s current unemployment rate is 5.4 percent, the same as the United State’s national rate, which also declined last month, according to a May 27 release from the Indiana Department of Workforce ?Development.

This decrease in unemployment coincides with a 10,600 job increase in the ?private sector in Indiana.

The majority of these new jobs are part of the trade, transportation and utilities sectors, with the remainder in professional and business services and construction.

If 7,800 more private sector jobs are created, Indiana will have returned to the state’s lowest ?unemployment rate since March 2000.

“Indiana’s sizable gains in the construction sector in April are definitely a positive indicator of economic growth as we move into the summer months,” said Steven J. Braun, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, in the release.

During the past two years, the state’s unemployment rates have dropped by 2.1 ?percent.

April 2015 statistics for unemployment rates by county will be made available May 28.
