IU gets 1 hit in first game of doubleheader

Two days after playing what IU players were calling their best game of the year, the Hoosiers lost Sunday against Michigan State 7-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

IU managed only one hit all game, a third inning single from sophomore outfielder Craig Dedelow. IU was close for the majority of the game, but the Spartans scored five runs in the seventh inning off of the combination of sophomore Thomas Belcher and junior Evan Bell.

IU starter Jake Kelzer pitched 5.2 innings allowing two runs, one earned while surrendering five hits and took the loss. He departed the game with IU trailing 1-0, but Belcher allowed a runner on second to score.

Michigan State starter Mick VanVossen pitched nine scoreless innings while striking out eight, three of which were against sophomore first baseman Austin Cangelosi, to pick up the win. He entered Sunday with an ERA of 5.85 and a record of 2-4.

IU only managed to put a runner in scoring position three times and only got the leadoff batter on base twice, a walk by Rodrigue in the first and walk by Sowers in the second.

Michigan State on the other hand put its leadoff batter on base seven times Sunday.

Game two of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3:10 p.m.

Junior Caleb Barager is scheduled to start on the mound for the Hoosiers.
