?Mitski to play the Blockhouse

After making her way into several “Best of South by Southwest” lists last weekend, Brooklyn, N.Y., singer-songwriter Mitski left Austin, Texas, and headed north for a six-show ?solo tour.

On one of the final stops of the tour, Mitski plays the Blockhouse tonight. Local bands the Tourniquets and the Yoko No No’s will also be performing. Local record label Winspear organized ?the show.

The show Mitski puts on is supposed to be a powerful one, Winspear founder Ben Wittkugel said. She plays a few songs in her set solo, he said, and those solo performances have something special about them.

“I’ve heard it’s a very intriguing and kind of emotional performance,” ?Wittkugel said.

Mitski plays shows with the support of two other musicians, a guitarist and drummer, while she herself wields a bass guitar. However, the singer-songwriter recently took to her social media accounts to say she will start releasing music under her full name, Mitski Miyawaki, if people won’t realize she is the sole creator behind her music.

“One thing that’s commonly misunderstood about her that she wants people to know is that it’s not a band,” Wittkugel said. “Mitski is her name, and she is Mitski.”

The most recent release from Mitski, “Bury Me at Make Out Creek,” was released last November on record label Double Double Whammy. This album is the third in her career.

Wittkugel said the album was largely overlooked at first, but its popularity has been growing recently. He said he really enjoys the ?album.

“There’s kind of some elements of singer-songwriter, and there’s some elements of fuzzier garage,” he said. “I think everyone that listens to it has an emotional connection to it.”

Sasha Geffen said in a post for music blog Consequence of Sound that the singer-songwriter’s album rides a very fine line ?between pop and punk rock.

“‘Bury Me at Make Out Creek’ promises to be delicate, then shatters that promise within its first minute and a half,” she said in the post regarding the moment when Mitksi’s voice is almost drowned out by the sudden sound of distorted guitars and percussion.

Mitski said on Twitter her next album won’t be released until early 2016, but she has plans to rerelease “Bury Me at Make Out Creek” through Don Giovanni Records April 7. The singer-songwriter recently joined the Don Giovanni Records roster, and she sets out for a six-night tour with new label mates Screaming Females on April 4.

Wittkugel said he’s looking forward to what she does in the future.

“I think she has a lot of potential,” he said. “She’s young and she has a really good sound.”
