City cancels winter deer cull

The Bloomington Parks and Recreation department has cancelled this winter’s deer cull at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve.

According to a release, the department was advised to cancel the cull by White Buffalo, Inc., a professional deer herd management contractor.

The cancellation was due to the deer not eating from baited sites due to this year’s acorn crop, mild winter weather and other available food sources.

“Conditions are not optimal for us to effectively reach our goal of removing deer from the nature preserve to protect the plant life there,” Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department Administrator Mick Renneisen said in the release.

The Special Use Deer Permit given to the City by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources expires on Feb. 28. Renneisen said in the release that the Parks and Recreation Department will continue to monitor plant sizes and species and the influence of deer browse at the nature preserve.
