IU student killed in fatal car crash due to 'improper passing'

IU student Alexander Ruesta, 18, died unexpectedly Dec. 17.

IU spokesperson Mark Land confirmed Ruesta was an IU student. 

Ruesta was killed from a blunt force trauma during a vehicle collision, according to the Porter County Coroner's Office. Ruesta was a backseat passenger in the car. 

The accident occurred due to another vehicle improperly passing the car. No alcohol was involved in the incident, according to the Porter County Sheriff's Department. 

Emergency medical service personnel pronounced him dead on the scene and he was not transported to a hospital, according to the coroner's office. 

Ruesta was a 2014 graduate of Wheeler High School, in Valparaiso, Ind. He is survived by mother Kristin Hill, brother Andres Ruesta, half-sister Andrea Galvan, according to his obituary published in the Times of Northwest Indiana. 

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Alex’s family and friends during this very sad time," Land said.
