Indiana Commission for Higher Education approve Assembly Hall renovations

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education met in Bloomington Thursday to discuss major renovations on campus.

The proposed renovations to Assembly Hall were approved by the committee, according to a live stream of the meeting.

The plan includes making improvements to the south lobby, restrooms, concessions areas and mechanical and other infrastructure systems. The scoreboard will also be replaced, according to the meeting’s agenda.

“Our goal of the project is to maintain the level of capacity in the building,” said Tom Morrison, vice president of capital planning and facilities, during the meeting. “We’re not looking to decrease to level of capacity in Assembly Hall, which many arenas, frankly, have been looking at doing.”

“Build in enough rooms for more banners,” a member of the audience replied.

The renovations will work to improve the facility while preserving both the current number of seats and their configuration, according to the agenda.

The project is to be funded by IU Building Corporation initially with repayment made by the IU Department of Athletics and IU Foundation , according to the agenda.

The projected is projected to cost $35,000,000.

Also approved was the renovation of the North Woodlawn Avenue Roadway. The project will be funded through campus renovation funds and is estimated to cost $4,700,000.

The improvements will stretch the length of North Woodlawn Avenue from 13th Street north to 17th Street.

Ten-foot-wide sidewalks will be placed on both sides of the road, and bike lanes will also be installed.

Post-baccalaureate certificates were also approved for children’s and young adult literature , Russian and East European area studies and public health . A master of science in data science was approved as well.
