Attempted sexual assault reported on B-Line trail

FROM IDS REPORTS

A 19-year-old woman was reportedly the victim of an attempted sexual assault at about 7:40 a.m. on the B-Line trail Monday morning.

She reported to the Bloomington Police Department that a man wearing a ski mask and latex gloves grabbed her while she was running on the trail, Sgt. Pam Gladish said.

Gladish said the victim told police the man forced her off the trail and threatened to sexually assault her. No sexual assault took place, though she had bruises and scratches on her upper leg, Gladish said. She also told police the attempted assault happened between Country Club Drive and a warehouse facility south of Grimes Lane, which Gladish said investigators found is close to pole 22 on the trail.

Two witnesses said they saw a man riding a BMX bicycle in the area. Police found a man matching the description and questioned him, Gladish said. However, the man has been released without charges.

“I think the thing everyone needs to remember is to be aware of their surroundings,” Gladish said.

She said it is especially important to pay attention in the north and south areas of the trail, which are less populated. BPD officials announced earlier this month that the trail would be subject to increased patrols.   The department  requests that any information regarding activity on the trail from 7:15 to 8 a.m. Monday to be reported to Detective Sarah Carnes at 812-349-3319.
