IUSA calls for ROTC early registration

The IU Student Association Congress passed a resolution Wednesday urging the University to allow students participating in ROTC to register early for their classes.

IUSA President Jose Mitjavila and the executive board plan to present a proposal to the IU Office of Enrollment Management for review at the Congress Assembly on October 16.

The resolution proposes modification of the registration time to allow ROTC members to register for their classes ahead of the remainder of the student body. Currently, ROTC members register for classes like the rest of the student body, despite mandatory time commitments, such as drill times.

IU student athletes currently register for classes early, and the IUSA Congress argued ROTC students should be given a similar opportunity because the time obligations for athletes are comparable to that of ROTC students.

Congress Press Secretary Connor Shaw said the resolution came about as part of an effort to reach out to ROTC members in appreciation of their work.

“These people are coming to college, and they know they’re going to be serving our country as soon as they graduate, so that’s the least we can do for them,” he said.

The resolution was passed unanimously among members present, Shaw said.
