Summer orientation continues through August

Summer orientation is the largest of four New Student Orientation programs for students and their parents, according to the Office of First Year Experience’s website.

It is attended by most students who enter IU in the fall. It is a two-day experience designed to help incoming freshmen navigate campus and learn what resources are available to them.

Summer orientation takes place in June and July during the six weeks FYE offers.

There is an exemption offered for incoming students who aren’t able to make it to orientation in June or July which allows them to attend the program in August shortly before the start of the fall semester.

Two schedules are offered to students who signed up for orientation in mid-March, Schedule A and Schedule B. Schedule A typically starts early in the morning on the first day and ends by 2:30 p.m. on the second day.

Schedule B typically starts late in the morning on the first day and ends by 6 p.m. the second day, according to the website.

Information sessions presented to incoming students over the course of orientation include “Professor’s Perspective,” in which an IU faculty member discusses expectations in the classroom, an overview of IU advising by area of study and topical sessions on subjects such as career services, finances and billing and student services, according to the website.

Placement exams, including the required Math Skills Assessment and foreign language placement exams, take place on the first day of orientation.

The second day schedule includes periods of free time, allowing students to explore campus at their leisure.
