IU gets first 2014 football commit

Michael Barwick, a 6-foot-1-inch, 291-pound defensive tackle from Summit Country Day High School in Cincinnati, committed to IU Sunday afternoon.

Barwick’s father, Michael Barwick Sr., tweeted “We just committed to Indiana University” and then later tweeted a photo of his son donning an IU hat and holding an ESPN microphone.

Barwick is the first commit of 2014 for the Hoosier football program.

The rising high school senior is ranked as the No. 51 defensive tackle on the 247Sports.com database, and the No. 45 recruit in Ohio. Rivals.com has him ranked No. 38 at his position with three stars.

The website says Barwick also had offers from Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan and Western Michigan.

Barwick’s commitment comes nine days earlier than IU’s first commitment last year, wide receiver Isaac Griffith.
