Male shoots himself upon police arrival at apartment

Police responded to a call to check on the welfare of a resident late Friday night on the first floor of an apartment building on the 1800 Block of South Walnut Street, Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Lucas Tate said.

At about 3 a.m., officers heard screaming from the second floor. When arriving, officers could see a male and female struggling in the doorway. The officers made verbal demands to the two individuals, who complied.

At the same time the two individuals, who were taken into custody, complied with officers, the officers heard a gunshot from the back room of the same second-floor apartment unit. When officers entered the back room, they found a male with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

Ambulance personnel were immediately notified, and the suspect was then transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation is ongoing, and the names of the individuals involved have not been released, pending family notification.
