YOUniversity to transition into IUSA administration Friday

The current Movement administration comes to a close this week. At a transition banquet this Friday, the current IU Student Association executives will officially hand over the reins of the student government to the incoming YOUniversity executives.

“Ever since last Wednesday (when election results were announced), we’ve been in talks with them,” said Dia Sharma, YOUniversity’s co-chief of staff. “Handing off material, handing off projects — we’re hoping for a smooth transition.”

Sharma said YOUniversity has met with the current executives to make the transition as “fluid” as possible.

Sharma and running mate Kathryn Flanigan will share the title of chief of staff, because each will be traveling abroad next year in separate semesters. Sharma said she is excited and relieved to have the opportunity to participate in IUSA again next year.

“That was a really high-stress campaign for all of us,” she said. “We’re excited we have the opportunity to implement the platforms we’ve worked on.”

Sharma said she thinks one challenge YOUniversity will have to face is student outreach. They will try to raise awareness of IUSA and its role as the student government, because, she said, not many students know about IUSA.

Those interested in participating in the executive branch of the student government next year can apply before the end of the semester. YOUniversity will release applications via social media.

“We’d love to have as many different perspectives as possible,” Sharma said. “We’re really excited. We’re looking forward to it, looking forward to the challenges that await, and it’s going to be a fun year.”
