No complaints filed for IUSA election

caElections CAROUSEL

No complaints were filed with the Election Commission after Tuesday and Wednesday’s IU Student Administration election.

Election Commissioner Melody Mostow confirmed that commission received no complaints Thursday afternoon by the 4 p.m. deadline.

If a complaint had been filed accusing the winning ticket of violating the Election Code, it may have delayed the winning YOUniversity ticket’s confirmation by the IUSA Supreme Court.

Complaints against a ticket would not necessarily lead to that ticket’s disqualification. In 2011, the Big Ten ticket was accused of seven minor violations of the Election Code and found guilty of six. They  were fined $957.93 after a Student Body Supreme Court case but not disqualified.

In 2008, however, the court disqualified the Kirkwood ticket after determining that six Election Code violations were made. This propelled Big Red, the runner-up ticket, into the IUSA executive.

The Supreme Court will certify the election results no sooner than 4 p.m. Friday. A complete list of elected Congressional representatives will be available next week.

Unofficial results reported after polls closed Thursday night indicated that YOUniversity, led by Student Body President-elect Jose Mitjavila, beat the Hoosiers 4 Solutions and SPARC for IU tickets by a margin of more than 3,000 votes.
