Man ruled not fit for firearm possession

Robert Redington will not regain possession of his $20,000 firearm collection.

Monroe Circuit Judge Mary Ellen Diekhoff ruled that Redington, 56, is a dangerous person as defined by law and not fit to possess said firearms.

According to Indiana law, an individual diagnosed with a mental disorder and determined to be   a danger to themselves or others may be prohibited from owning a
firearm.

Diekhoff’s ruling came after a four-hour hearing earlier this month.

During the hearing, Redington said a number of the firearms shared a bed with him when he sleeps. His personal collection consisted of 51 guns.   

In early August, officers from the Bloomington Police Department found Redington in the parking garage across from Kilroy’s Sports Bar with two loaded shotguns and a rangefinder.

He raised concern on behalf of the officers when he began to ask about the ongoing investigation of missing IU student Lauren Spierer.

Redington had a license to carry and was never charged with a crime.

He underwent a psychiatric evaluation at IU-Health Bloomington Hospital and was later
released.
