Art Museum sponsors Jazz in July series

Friday evenings throughout July in Bloomington will be particularly jazzy at the IU Art Museum.

This year marks the 21st annual Jazz in July series, which is part of IU’s second annual Summer Festival of the Arts.

The museum will be the site of free, family-friendly jazz concerts from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Friday on the Sculpture Terrace.

Some of Bloomington’s most popular jazz musicians will perform at the Friday concerts, according to a press release.

The first event in the series is on July 6 and will feature The Andy Cobine Trio. On July 13, the Mahluli-McCutchen Quartet will perform, followed by The Monika Herzig Acoustic Project on July 20. The last event in the series will be a performance by the Stardusters Jazz Orchestra on July 27.

During the events, the museum’s Gallery of the Art of the Western World, located on the first floor, will also be open 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Nan Brewer, curator of works on paper at the Art Museum, will give a short talk befire the final performance. She will discuss three prints by the German modernist William Baumeister, as well as his work in theater and his belief in the intersection of art.

“The summer concert series is well-received and highly anticipated each year,” she said. “The community is always excited to see the lineup of musicians.”
