Indiana Senate passes state right-to-work bill, House continues debate

WHO
House Democrats, who say the right-to-work bill will destroy unions, and House Republicans, who say the bill will attract more business to Indiana and create jobs.

WHAT

A bill that would make Indiana the 23rd right-to-work state in the nation.

The bill, which passed through the Senate earlier this week, would prohibit any employment contract that requires union membership.

WHEN
The Senate passed the bill Monday with only nine Republicans voting against the bill, with a 28-22 vote.

Although the House began discussing the bill for the first time in weeks, only a handful of amendments were voted on.

A final vote is expected later this week.

WHERE
Indiana Statehouse

WHY
Although he originally was against the bill, Gov. Mitch Daniels said in December that one of his legislative goals for his final year in office is the passing of right-to-work legislation.

It’s been on-and-off the table since last spring, when Democrats fled the state to delay the issue.

In 2012, the Democrats have done everything from walking off the House floor to proposing copious amendments to keep a final vote at bay.
Republicans have enough votes to pass the bill when and if it comes to the House floor.
