Calbert Cheaney named Director of Basketball Operations

Former IU basketball star Calbert Cheaney is returning to IU. Cheaney will join IU coach Tom Crean’s staff as director of Basketball Operations.

His previous coaching experience includes working for the Golden State Warriors as a special assistant and assistant coach to former Golden State head coach Keith Smart, another IU alumnus. He was a No. 6 pick in the 1993 draft by the Washington Bullets and averaged 9.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in 13 seasons in the NBA.

At Indiana, Cheaney was one of the most talented players. He averaged 19.8 points and set the record for most field goals made with 1,018. He won both the Wooden and Naismith Awards. He was a three-time All-American and was named Big Ten MVP in 1993. He is a member of the IU Athletics Hall of Fame and led IU to the Final Four in 1992, when the team lost to eventual champion Duke.

Cheaney will replace Drew Adams, who will become Director of Basketball Operations at the University of New Mexico. Adams will serve under former Hoosier, Steve Alford.

“Every kid who plays college basketball at this level aspires to achieve what Calbert did on and off the court, both collegiately and as a professional,” Crean said in a press release.
