IU ranks 11th in public universities with $1.23 billion endowment

IU is 11th in the country for public universities in market value of its endowments.

The ranking is from the National Association of College and University Business Officers and is out of 842 colleges and universities. IU also placed fifth for Big Ten public universities.

In June, the University’s endowment totaled $1.23 billion. The first-ranked school was University of Texas System with more than $12 billion.

President Michael McRobbie said in a press release that the economic environment has affected endowments for all schools including IU.

“Given these circumstances, we are pleased that IU still remains among the top-15 public universities in the nation and has even improved its standing against other excellent institutions. This ranking reflects strength in a difficult environment,” he said in the release.

IU improved from a 12th-place ranking in 2007-08.

The value of the University’s endowment dropped in the 2009 fiscal year, the value for the calendar year actually increased by 20 percent.

President of the Indiana University Foundation Gene Tempel said the Investment Committee of the Foundation’s Board of Directors and investment staff deserves the credit for retaining the endowment’s value.
