Hoosiers fall in OT, 77-75

Poor shooting and turnovers defined the Hoosier's 77-75 overtime loss to Cleveland State, ending the women's basketball team's three-game winning streak.

The Hoosiers had one final chance to win the game, but senior Jamie Braun missed a 3-point shot with nine seconds remaining. The final clank summed up the Hoosiers' evening.

The Hoosiers shot 43.1 percent from the field and hit 5-16 from the 3-point line. The Hoosiers also did not shoot well from the charity stripe, hitting just over 58 percent on the game. The Vikings also shot poorly, sinking only 36.5 percent from the field.

IU turnovers led to 20 Vikings points, as the Hoosiers gave the ball up 23 times in the game. All but one Hoosier had at least one turnover. IU, meanwhile, forced 19 Vikings turnovers and scored 17 points off them.

IU also lost the battle of the boards, particularly on the offensive side. The Hoosiers had only 15 offensive rebounds, compared to 31 defensive rebounds by the Vikings.  The Hoosiers were able to use those offensive rebounds for 16 second-chance points, but it still wasn’t enough to outlast the Vikings in overtime.

Sophomore forward Sasha Chaplin led the team in scoring with a double-double, finishing with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Chaplin also had 3 steals and 2 blocks. Braun and junior Jori Davis also scored in double digits.

Braun finished the night with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 6 turnovers. Braun shot 1-3 from the foul line, and only 6-14 from the floor. Braun did, however, hit 50 percent of her 3-pointers.

After today’s game, Braun only needs four assists to move into eighth place all-time, and needs six more steals to move into fifth place all-time for the Hoosiers.

Normally superhuman, Davis did not shoot well against the Vikings. Davis finished with 11 points, but shot 3-13 from the field and missed all four of the 3-point shots she took. She also missed four foul shots.

Cleveland State guard Kaily Klein had a game-high 28 points. Klein also had a double-double with 12 rebounds. Thirteen of Klein’s points were in the second half.

The Hoosiers take the floor next against Toledo in their final non-conference matchup on December 22.
