IU Athletics moves 2010 matchup against Penn State to FedEx Field in Washington

IU football will have a chance to play at the largest professional sports venue in the US Nov. 20, 2010.

Under an arrangement with the Washington Redskins and FedEx Field, IU’s 2010 conference home game against Penn State will be moved to the Redskins facility in Landover, Md.

Along with potentially playing in front of 91,704 fans in a neutral setting, the athletics department will earn $3 million through the agreement if they can fill the stands with 7,000 Hoosier fans.

“This is a unique opportunity to partner with an outstanding organization like the Washington Redskins to bring Hoosier football to within an afternoon’s drive of all our fans and tens of thousands of alumni that live along the eastern seaboard,” said IU Director of Athletics Fred Glass in a press release.

The game will also be televised by one of the Big Ten Conference’s partners – ABC, the Big Ten Network or ESPN.

The last college football game played at FedEx Field – a match-up between the Virginia Tech Hokies and USC Trojans – was in 2004. More than 91,500 fans were in attendance for that contest.
