Campus to have early voting site 3 days in October

Election Board makes decision Thursday night

Students will have three days for early voting on campus, the Monroe County Election Board decided at a meeting Thursday night.

“I think we’ll see a lot of people taking advantage of this and have a great appreciation for it,” said Jim Fielder, election board secretary.

Early voting will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 to 16 at a campus location to be determined. Three days of early voting will also take place in Ellettsville, and another three days will take place at Sherwood Oaks apartments.

At the meeting, Jack Schmit, president of the election board, began by proposing five voting sites with two days at each site and called for board member Guy Loftman’s approval.

Loftman denied the proposal and instead proposed multiple sites and more time to the areas expecting to be crowded with high turnouts.

“As I’ve said, at IU we have a large number of newly-registered voters so it would be a good idea to have more there where we expect a heavy turnout,” Loftman said.

After disagreeing between each other, Schmit motioned for three sites with three days each.

Board members planned to make the decision about the number of early voting sites and the locations at the meeting Sept. 9, but it adjourned because of disagreements.
